To all at touchdownclaymores,
Excuse me for this having taken a couple of days longer than it should, but I wanted to write and let all of you know that the reports of First Down\'s closure are indeed true, a decision taken by our company earlier this week.
I have spent the week in a lot of discussions over what happens to the staff, myself included, and also on how we intend to close the title, something that carries enormous importance with me. To that end, I have had many discussions this week concerning subscribers in particular and how they will be refunded and you should be able to read details of that in the final issue, No.1099, which will be on sale next Thursday, July 5.
Obviously, it has been a traumatic week in our office. I was on the team in May 1986 when we produced issue No.1 and will be turning out the lights when I leave next week after a 21-year run that has had highs and lows but has been a delight from start to finish.
I wish I had had an opportunity to post here earlier but as you can imagine my days have been full this week with so much to attend to. Being a Glaswegian born and bred, I have a particular fondness for the Claymores and over the years, many of us have met, whether debating football on the backfields at Murrayfield or at Lesser Hampden, or indeed sharing an Altbier or sneakies outside the Knoten in Dusseldorf. Already this week, I have had contact from Steve Livingstone in Jacksonville and Shuggie Cheddar in New York. Both were shattered to hear the news.
Issue No.1099 will be a thank you and goodbye issue and I hope you enjoy it but in the meantime, I simply wanted to write to say thank you for all the years you have been buying and contributing to First Down. I know some of you have been with us throughout those 21 years. You have my gratitude and respect, which makes it even harder to have to write this.
I wish you all the very best and have no doubt I will see some of you at Wembley in October.
