Patriots put franchise tag on Samuel NFL.com wire reports
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Feb. 16, 2007) -- The New England Patriots designated Asante Samuel as their franchise player in a move that would keep the cornerback with the team for at least one more season.
The 26-year-old has played in 59 regular-season and 11 playoff games with New England since being drafted in 2003, and would have been an unrestricted free agent if the Patriots hadn't designated him as their franchise player.
Without the tag, the Patriots would not be compensated if he signed with another team.
"Asante Samuel is an outstanding player who has been a consistent contributor for us for several years," coach Bill Belichick said in a statement the team issued. "We hope Asante remains a Patriot for many seasons to come."
Samuel previously said he would like to stay in New England under the "right conditions." He tied Champ Bailey for the NFL regular-season lead with 10 interceptions last season.
New England drafted Samuel out of Central Florida in the fourth round, 120th overall, in the 2003 NFL draft.
Samuel has returned three interceptions for touchdowns in the playoffs, tying him for the most in NFL history with former Oakland Raider Willie Brown.

Good news?..........maybe but it will cost the Pats mucho $$'s and eat into the salary cap cash...very surprising move this actually cos the Patriots dont usually spend too much money on trying to keep players...problem is that if he signs a 1 year contract then they cant franchise him again next year I dont think

Each year each National Football League team is allowed to designate a player who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent as a franchise player. This designation is applied to a player through the use of the franchise tag. Each team has access each year to only one franchise tag (of either the exclusive or non-exclusive forms) or one transition tag. As a result, each team may only designate one player each year as that team's franchise player.
Usually designated for players of great skill or of high importance to the team, a franchise tag allows a team's managers the privilege of strategically retaining valuable free-agent players while seeking talent through the NFL draft or other acquisitions without exceeding the League's salary cap.
If the designated franchise player elects to play for the team that designated him with the franchise tag, and does not negotiate a contract with another team his one year salary is guaranteed.
If a club withdraws their offered contract the player immediately reverts to an unrestricted free agent.

I might be be wrong about this but i thought a a team could only franchise a player 3 times.Forcing him to sign 1 year contracts every time then after the 3rd 1 year contract runs out by rule the team cant franchise him again. So the Patriots could franchise 2 more times but thats all.
