Right guys,
This Wednesday will likely be the last midweek training session for this year as it'll probably be the last week that it stays light enough for us.
However, we will be continuing to train on Sundays for the time-being (As I've said before, we usually have a break from November-ish to February, but this year I'm happy to continue right through the winter - we'd probably look at booking somewhere indoors - if people want me to, although I need the commitment from people that we will definitely get decent numbers each week as we would be having to pay for somewhere indoors and the last thing I want to do is to pay for it and then only a couple of people turn up).
I'm working on getting some tournaments/friendlies organised over the next month or so, which will allow us to try new things and get some of the newer guys lots of playing time.
I've noticed over the past few weeks that it seems to be the same people turning up for training each week and a few others have gone missing. I appreciate that some people are away/injured at the moment and have let me know (or passed on a message through someone else) that this is the case, which is fine (obviously gutted that you can't make it at the moment but I know you will when you're available again so that's fine). However, there are some others who have gone missing without a sound. I understand that not everyone can make it to every training session, and I would never demand that everyone does. However, what I would like is if those who struggle to get to training on a regular basis could try and make it to at least every second or third training session.
I know it seems a bit strange me banging on about attendance at training when the season's finished but now is the time that we really need to be starting to prepare for next season. I'm already seeing a huge improvement in those that have been coming along regularly and things such as understanding of the defense and route running have really improved.
At the end of the day, if you don't come to training then you're missing out on the chance to improve on things, but you're also letting down your teammates who do turn up on a regular basis (at the end of the day, the more people we have at training, the more we can do in terms of scrimmages, etc.).
We have a team here that's definitely heading in the right direction and with some hard work and determination I believe we can be real challengers in the league next season (as it is we only just fell short of the playoffs this year).
I'd also like to encourage anyone who has any family members, friends, work colleagues, Jamaican sprinters, etc. who might be interested in coming along to training and giving it a go to see if you can get them along to training. Right now is one of the best times to get new people interested and playing as the NFL is on the tellly and we've got lots of time at the moment to take people through all of the basics and get them ready for the season. We're always happy to have new people - the more the merrier! At the end of the day if we have too many for one team then we can look at entering a second team next season, although we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it.
If anyone would like flyers/leaflets to hand out/post on a work message board or email bulletin then please let me know. I can email these to you right away or, if you need, I can also print them for you if that's easier.
On top of this, if anyone has any ideas about how we can promote the club to potential new players (and/or sponsors), or would like to get involved in doing so, please let me know.
Right, think that's it for the moment, sorry for the long post! As I said though I really feel like we've got a great chance to be real challengers next year, but we've got to continue to put the work in now. Trust me, it will pay off!
One final thing, I'd just like to thank everyone for their efforts so far this year, both players and coaches alike. It's great to see everyone improving so much and it's a testament to the hard work that has been put in by the players and the coaching given by those who have been involved with the coaching side of things.
Thanks,
Mike
