I know this starts off about bouncing ball of centers back but if you read on it tells you about a QB catching a deflected ball.
Bouncing the ball of the centers back Rule - "The quarterback cannot run with the ball past the line of scrimmage, unless he has handed the ball off, tossed or pitched, and it has been returned to him." Clarification - The QB is not eligible to run with the ball after catching his own forward pass unless it has been touched by a member of the opposing team first. This removes the numerous situations that could arise where qb's throw short passes forward only to have it batted back to them by a member of their own team. Application - If a QB catches his own forward pass without it having touched an opposing player first the play shall be blown dead with the ruling being an incomplete pass. Should the QB catch his own forward pass after it has been touched by an opposing player the QB would now be eligible to run with the ball so the ruling would be a catch and the play to continue.
